02:17 PM -- Senate Bill 06-020 - Concerning the Creation of a Nurse Licensure Compact

Representative Green, prime sponsor, explained the provisions of the bill and discussed the fees addressed in the fiscal note. Representative Green commented that the bill directs the governor to enter into a multi-state nurse licensure compact. It establishes relationships between party states in the areas of jurisdiction, discipline, and information sharing. Representative Green pointed out that the general provisions of the compact are as follows:

Licenses issued to registered nurses (RNs) or to licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPNs) by a home state shall be recognized by the party states. In order to obtain and retain a license, an applicant must meet the home state's qualifications for licensure and license renewal as well as all other state laws.

Party states may limit or revoke the multi-state licensure privilege of a nurse to practice in their state and may take necessary disciplinary actions. The party state shall notify the home state if disciplinary action is taken.

Every nurse practicing in a party state must comply with the state practice laws of the state in which the patient is located at the time care is rendered.
