Senator Wiens, sponsor, presented House Bill 06-1123 concerning situations in which a law enforcement officer shall take a runaway child into custody. The bill allows the police to pick up and hold a child long enough for parents and guardians to ask law enforcement officials for help in getting the children back. The committee discussed the House amendments to the bill. Senator Wiens related a story of a runaway child. The committee discussed the mandatory requirement for arresting a child who has run away. Senator Wiens stressed that the bill would allow parents (or guardians) to call the police to ask for assistance in getting child back, even if no missing persons report has been filed.
