Senator Spence, sponsor, presented House Bill 06-1122 concerning procedures relating to missing persons. The bill requires law enforcement officials to accept missing person reports promptly. It specifies the minimum actions a law enforcement agency may take upon receiving a missing person report and requires coroners and medical examiners to take steps, including the obtaining of DNA samples, to assist in the identification of unidentified human remains. The bill also prohibits cremation of unidentified human remains.

Peg Ackerman, County Sheriffs of Colorado, spoke in support of the bill. Ms. Ackerman stated that she is authorized to express the support of the Police Chiefs Association. She discussed the procedure for accepting missing persons reports and the need for standardization of that procedure.

Wesley Riber, Colorado Coroner's Association, spoke in favor of the bill. Mr. Riber stated that the bill represents a procedure that most coroner's offices currently follow, but this bill allows the coroners to use the law to back up their actions.

Robert Bristow, Project Jason, spoke in favor of the bill. Mr. Bristow's organization supports the passage of this bill and bills like it across the nation. He provided statistics of missing persons in the United States.
