SENATE SPONSORSHIP Andrews, House Committees Senate Committees HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 04-1040 Concerning congratulating John Elway for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, John Elway was born on June 28, 1960, to Jack and Janet Elway in Port Angeles, Washington; and WHEREAS, After the 1982 season, Stanford University senior John Elway was selected as a college football consensus All-American and finished second in balloting for the Heisman Trophy; and WHEREAS, When John Elway turned his back on a promising career in professional baseball in 1983 to play pro football, he began an historic career as one of the best all-time football players; and WHEREAS, In 1983, John Elway was the number one overall draft pick as the first-round draft choice of the Baltimore Colts, and, after refusing to play for them, was then traded to the Denver Broncos where he quickly became one of the most feared quarterbacks in the NFL; and WHEREAS, John Elway played 234 games as a Bronco, the most of any player in team history; and WHEREAS, John Elway is the only quarterback to start in 5 Super Bowls and 22 post season games; and WHEREAS, John Elway's record 47 fourth quarter, game-winning or game-tying drives are legendary, and John helped the Broncos score the winning points 21 times with less than 2 minutes left in the game; and WHEREAS, Today, the Elway-led fourth-quarter rally to tie the 1986 AFC championship game and send it into overtime is simply referred to as "The Drive"; and WHEREAS, John Elway is the only player in NFL history to pass for more than 3,000 yards and rush for more than 200 yards in the same season 7 consecutive times and he achieved the 3,000-yard passing mark in a total of 12 seasons, placing him second all-time in number of seasons with 3,000 passing yards; and WHEREAS, In 40 separate games, John Elway passed for at least 300 yards, including 4 times in the playoffs; and WHEREAS, John Elway was only the second quarterback in NFL history to record more than 40,000 yards passing and 3,000 yards rushing during his career; and WHEREAS, John Elway ranks second all-time in 3 of the game's most significant passing categories: Passing yards (51,475), attempts (7,250), and completions (4,123); and WHEREAS, John Elway was responsible for 334 touchdowns -- 300 passing (third all-time), 33 rushing, and one receiving; and WHEREAS, In his final season with the Broncos, John Elway earned a passer rating of 93.0, the highest of his career; and WHEREAS, In 1987, John Elway was chosen as the NFL's Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year and in both 1987 and 1993 was chosen as the AFC Offensive MVP and Player of the Year; and WHEREAS, John Elway was named All-NFL 3 times and All-AFC 4 times, and elected to 9 Pro Bowls; and WHEREAS, John Elway was named to the 1990s All-Decade Team; and WHEREAS, John Elway won the Super Bowl MVP award in Super Bowl XXXIII, his last game as a Bronco before retiring; and WHEREAS, John Elway consistently demonstrated the qualities of perseverance, competitiveness, teamwork, and leadership that helped make the Broncos a winning team for 16 years and led to 5 trips to the Super Bowl and 2 Super Bowl wins; and WHEREAS, On January 31, 2004, John Elway was selected to be one of 5 new inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility; now, therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-fourth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: That we, the Colorado General Assembly, congratulate John Elway on achieving the ultimate honor in pro football in being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and recognize his record-making success in pro football. Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this joint resolution be transmitted to John Elway; the Denver Broncos; Janet Elway, John Elway's mother; Janet Buchan Elway; each of John Elway's children: Jessica Gwen Elway, Jordan Marie Elway, Jack Elway, and Juliana Elway; and Stanford University Athletic Department.
