01:35 PM -- Confirmation of School Of Mines Board Of Trustees

Senator Hill, Chair, welcomed the committee members to the meeting. He invited Jim Spaanstra, Chair of the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) Board of Trustees, to the table. Mr. Spaanstra introduced the reappointee to the board, Admiral Richard Truly. Copies of the Governor's appointment letter and the appointee's application and resume were distributed to the committee (Attachment A). Mr. Truly talked about his personal and professional background, and about his years spent in the Navy. He told the committee about his past experience as a member of the Mines board and why he would like to be reappointed to the board.

01:49 PM -- Confirmation of Community Colleges And Occupational Education - State Board For

Nancy McCallin, President of the Colorado Community College System, came to the table and introduced the appointee to the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education, Dr. Byron McClenney. Copies of the Governor's appointment letter and the appointee's application and resume were distributed to the committee (Attachment B). Dr. McClenney introduced himself to the committee and spoke about his personal and professional background. He spoke about his experience working in the community college system and about several national education initiatives which he's been involved with implementing. He talked about student success and what he will bring to the board.

Dr. McClenney answered questions from the committee about the opportunities provided by and challenges faced by community colleges. He answered questions about affordability and how the K-12 and community college systems can work together. Dr. McCallin answered questions from the committee about adjunct professors.

02:03 PM -- Presentation by students from Colorado School of Mines

Senator Hill invited the student presenters from the Colorado Schools of Mines (Mines) to come to the table. Jerry Miller, Lauren Schumacher, Karen O'Brien, John Has, Stuart Ferris, and Harold Jacobson introduced themselves to the committee. Mr. Miller talked about the school's rigorous course work and how the school prepares students to be leaders. He said the school stresses the importance of student outcomes. Ms. Schumacher talked about why she chose to attend Mines and about how and why she decided to major in petroleum engineering. She discussed how the school helps students succeed and about job opportunities for students upon graduation. Ms. O'Brien talked about her work in the school's research lab in biomedical engineering and new technologies in the biomedical field. She talked about the opportunities that are provided at Mines that are not provided at bigger schools.
