Representative Dore, sponsor, presented Senate Bill 14-047, concerning the payment of death benefits for seasonal wildland firefighters killed in the line of duty. The bill, recommended by the Wildfire Matter Review Committee, provides a lump-sum death benefit of $10,000 to the survivors of seasonal firefighters.

Paul Cooke, Director, Division of Fire Prevention and Control, spoke in favor of the bill. He discussed the background of the bill and the off-setting of up front costs to family members during the loss of life of a seasonal firefighter. Director Cooke answered question from the committee regarding the eligibility of seasonal firefighters for the program.

Representative Dore answered questions regarding the definition of survivors.

Justin Whitesell, representing the Larimer County Sheriff, spoke in favor of the bill. He discussed the function and experience of volunteer wildland firefighters. Mr. Whitesell said that the bill will provide financial protection for the families of volunteer firefighters that are lost while protecting their community.
