Representative Ferrandino presented the highlights of the budget for the Department of Public Safety. He talked about changes to the State Patrol computer systems that require increased expenditures. Vehicle lease adjustments for the State Patrol are also required. There are increased costs in the Division of Criminal Justice and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Representative Levy asked about continued funding for staffing of the Colorado Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice. She also asked about General Fund money used to conduct background checks for the purchase of weapons (Instacheck). The committee discussed the DNA testing of felons and funding for those tests. Representative Levy asked about funding of State Patrol troopers to patrol roads leaving gaming communities. Representative Court asked for further clarification of General Fund dollars used for Instacheck. The committee discussed the number of criminal background checks conducted each year.
