Senator Williams called the meeting to order.

Former Representative Bernie Buescher commented on his appointment as Secretary of State and thanked the Governor for making the appointment. He responded to questions from the committee. Representative Buescher said that he believes that the Secretary of State's office should be administered in a nonpartisan fashion. He commented on requirements for voter identification in Colorado. He commented on the relationship between the Secretary of State and county clerks, and spoke of his recent efforts to reach out to county clerks. He said that the primary role of the Secretary of State is to ensure fair elections, and commented on a recent meeting he attended with the business community. He noted other functions of the Department of State. He commented on the integrity of Colorado's voting machines and the testing of the machines, including a post-election auditing process.
