Senator Mitchell, prime sponsor, presented Senate Bill 09-287 which extends the voluntary contribution designation benefitting the Special Olympics Colorado Fund from tax year 2009 through tax year 2011. He stated that the checkoff has been a popular choice of taxpayers on the Colorado tax checkoff forms, and provided stories about Special Olympics.

Ms. Mindy Watrous, representing Special Olympics Colorado, testified in support of the bill. She stated that through sports training and competition, individuals with intellectual disabilities can gain both intellectual and athletic growth. Ms. Watrous explained that her organization does not receive any federal funding. She provided the committee with additional information about how the program assists individuals in Colorado.

Ms. Erin Holloway, representing Special Olympics Colorado, testified in support of the bill. She testified about her personal experience with Special Olympics in Colorado for over 30 years and her experiences during her youth. Ms. Holloway shared her thoughts about how joining swimming activities in Special Olympics changed her life, and explained her service as a Global Ambassador to Special Olympics.
