INTRODUCTION OF MEMORIAL
The following memorial was read by title:
SJM 00-001 by Senator Rupert; also Representative Gordon--Memorializing former Representative Byron Johnson.
WHEREAS, By the Will of Divine Providence, our beloved former member, the Honorable Byron Johnson, departed this life on January 6, 2000, at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, Representative Johnson was born October 12, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Representative Johnson was raised in Wisconsin and earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree, and doctorate in economics from the University of Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, He married Catherine Teter in October 1938; and
WHEREAS, He worked in Washington, D.C., from 1942 to 1947 for the Budget Bureau and the Social Security Administration; and
WHEREAS, In 1947, Representative Johnson obtained an appointment at the University of Denver, where he taught economics until 1956; and
WHEREAS, Representative Johnson served in the General Assembly from 1954 to 1956; and
WHEREAS, He continued to serve this state as an administrative assistant to Governor Steve McNichols; and
WHEREAS, Representative Johnson served one term in the 86th Congress of the United States of America as the representative from Colorado's 2nd Congressional District, which at the time covered almost all of northeast Colorado except Denver; and
WHEREAS, Representative Johnson was a pacifist who, while in Congress, was best known for voting against the defense budget twice; and
WHEREAS, He worked in the Agency for International Development from 1961 to 1964; and
WHEREAS, Representative Johnson returned to Colorado in 1964 as a professor of economics at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he taught until his retirement in 1984; and
WHEREAS, He further served this state as a Regent of the University of Colorado for 12 years and on the Regional Transportation District board of directors for two years; and
WHEREAS, It is fitting that we, the members of the Sixty-second General Assembly, pay tribute to the dedicated service of Representative Johnson and express our deep regret and sorrow occasioned by his death; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-second General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:
That, in the death of Byron Johnson, the people of the state of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the Sixty-second General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and pay tribute to a man who served this state and our nation well and faithfully.
Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Memorial be sent to Representative Johnson's sons, Steven and Eric Johnson, his daughter, Christine Johnson, and his two brothers, the Reverend Larry Johnson and the Reverend David Johnson.
