INTRODUCTION OF MEMORIAL
The following memorial was read by title:
SM 00-002 by Senator Wattenberg--Memorializing former Senator Fay DeBerard.
WHEREAS, By the Will of Divine Providence, our beloved Senator Fay DeBerard departed this life on January 20, 2000, at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, Senator DeBerard was born on March 15, 1905, in Sedgwick, Colorado; and
WHEREAS, Senator DeBerard graduated from Kremmling Union High School where he enjoyed basketball, track, and boxing; and
WHEREAS, Senator DeBerard then went on to further his education at Colorado State University where he studied animal husbandry and participated in ROTC; and
WHEREAS, While a rancher in Kremmling, Senator DeBerard enjoyed hunting, golf, and fishing and stayed close to his agricultural roots by serving as president of the Colorado Hereford Association and as a member of numerous other local and state organizations; and
WHEREAS, Senator DeBerard also served on the Middle Park Hospital Board and the Grand County Fair Board and held the offices of Grand County Commissioner and West Grand School Board President; and
WHEREAS, After being appointed to the Colorado Senate in 1954, Senator DeBerard chaired the Livestock, Fish and Game, Transportation, and Education committees and served on numerous other committees, including the Water and Water Resources, Mining, Judiciary, and Wildlife, Parks, Natural Resources, and Energy committees; and
WHEREAS, Senator DeBerard served as the Senate assistant majority leader for four years and as the Senate President Pro Tem for four years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Senator DeBerard was dedicated to water, education, environment, and agriculture issues which led to his selection as one of the five original inductees to the Colorado Agricultural Hall of Fame; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-second General Assembly of the State of Colorado:
That, in the death of Fay DeBerard, the people of the state of Colorado have lost a dedicated public servant and outstanding citizen, and that we, the members of the Senate of the Sixty-second General Assembly, do hereby extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family and pay tribute to a man who served his state well and faithfully.
Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Memorial be sent to Senator DeBerard's sons Fay DeBerard, Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, and Robert DeBerard of Twin Falls, Idaho, daughter Marilyn Curry of Hotchkiss, Colorado, and sister Sarah Orr of Kremmling, Colorado.
