On motion of Senator Wattenberg, and with a majority of all members elected to the Senate having voted in the affirmative, the poem by Senate Chaplain Reverend Arlyn Tolzmann is printed below:
THE SENATE, 2000
No matter whether from cities, town, suburbs, or farms,
each day we all must pass the sergeants at arms.
Now, I've got to tell you, these guys aren't all that scary,
they look like someone my aunts would marry.
Then up front there are those who can't be late,
it's their job to keep all the paper work straight.
Soon the reading clerk starts his reading
and I wonder why he's not pulled over for speeding!
Every once and awhile at the microphone there's a jokesterin',
which is one way on Monday mornings to get the folks a stirrin'.
Before the legislative session closes,
you will have done guns and Moses;
amendments
and commandments.
Beneath the Capitol dome,
a bill on religious meetings at home.
While some are thinking of term limit farewells,
there was a bill dealing with the usual farm smells.
Now if you disagree, or so I think,
on the Senate floor you can raise a stink.
Pushing learning and education hard,
some want to give schools their own report card.
Campaign finance reform
always kicks up quite a storm.
Then there is the question how we can have both,
quality of life and booming growth?
One industry, sadly going full tilt,
is the number of prisons needing to be built.
You look at bills that affect your neighbor,
with one eye on tax windfalls, the other on Tabor.
There were bills on a judge deciding when someone should die,
or whether that decision with a jury should lie.
Some votes are not just by party line,
which to many, of course, is really just fine.
Through the sessions, there are yes and no votes, never maybes,
with discussion on abandoned vehicles and also babies.
There have been hearings of every sort,
even one leading to a state trooper's escort.
For phone deregulation there weren't enough fans,
but there were enough for certain marriage bans.
Some might stay trim and fit upon a treadmill,
but a committee made obesity another dead bill.
There were ravings
on daylight savings,
an uphill fight to climb,
which some saw as a waste of time.
At times it's said, "you're puttin' on the dog",
but at the Stock Show you anted up and bought a hog.
If you can imagine the Senate as a boat with unfurled sail,
at times it must seem what's needed are more buckets to bail!
You study, work hard, you're certainly not lazy,
but sometimes your bills are seen as plain crazy.
As glamorous as some think your job would be,
few of us would want it, I think you'd agree;
the angry constituent telling you how he feels,
with the eager lobbyists right on your heels.
For those soon leaving the Senate with its big salary,
who knows, maybe you'll like it in the visitors gallery.
Soon term limits will scoot many out the door,
unless, of course, a run for the House will be your encore.
